Message from the VC

'We are a university that is here for Greater Western Sydney. We look to have a university community that is diverse, that reflects the region. It's wonderful to be able to say that our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community is part of our university'.
Professor Janice Reid, Vice-Chancellor

Message from our sponsor

'The University wants to make sure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have opportunities for education and employment. To ensure our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment program works, we have partnered with the community and set up an Advisory Board of community leaders to help us design and monitor the program.'
Rhonda Hawkins, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Corporate Strategy and Services

Recruitment, selection and strategy toolkit

Purpose of the recruitment toolkit

The University of Western Sydney is working to maximise employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It seeks to promote the benefits of inclusiveness, respect and diversity in the workplace to all employees.

The Recruitment and Selection tool kit provides guidelines and a starting point to implement Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategies within your business.

National priorities

As a significant contributor to employment in Greater Western Sydney, UWS is commited to closing the gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and has a key part to play within the community it serves. GWS has the highest number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of any region in Australia outside the Northern Territory. The 2006 Census recorded 25,699 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in this region with 58% less than 24 years of age. It also shows the unemployment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is more than two and a half times the non-Indigenous unemployment rate (5%).

UWS is playing a key role to support the Council of Australian Governments to 'close the gap' in the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in paid employment.

This includes:

  • valuing diversity of cultures in the workplace that are free from discrimination
  • access to education
  • access to continuing employment
  • participation in employment in a wide range of work areas
  • access to professional development and increase skill sets.
