Data Centre Transition

Data Centre Transition Weekend

Welcome to the Data Centre Transition information page.

Over the period 21 June to 18 August, the University will undertake a phased relocation of existing data centre equipment and associated IT services to a purpose-built, external facility in North Ryde. This facility will provide significant advantages, including increased protection for key University systems and a major reduction in power consumption.

During the transition, some disruptions will be necessary. However, the move has been scheduled over five weekends (as shown below) to ensure minimal impact. During business hours there is expected to be no impact to IT services. Over each weekend, activities will start at 10.00 pm on Friday and be concluded no later than 10.00 pm on Sunday. In many cases, services will be restored in a shorter time.

As the transition progresses, periodic updates will be posted to this page.

This is an innovative and key strategic project for the University that will deliver significant benefits for some short-term inconvenience, during which your patience is appreciated.

Transition Schedule

16-18 August:

Oracle Financials will be disrupted.

Completed

21-23 June:

UWS Research Store will move from Parramatta to North Ryde. This will impact research virtual servers and users of the UWS Research Data Repository and R: Drive.

This transition activity has been completed successfully.

5-7 July:

The Parramatta data centre will be shut down for an extended period, impacting most business applications. Staff email and calendar services will be unavailable between 10.00 pm and midnight on Friday and 10.00 pm and midnight on Saturday, including email access from handheld devices such as smartphones and iPads. Outside of the above hours, staff email services will remain available except for Blackberry services and email list services (Majordomo).

With resolution of issues that resulted in some key services being unavailable on Monday, this complex activity has now been completed. IT Services regrets the business hours interruptions to services and appreciates the patience and co-operation of staff and students during investigations and rectification of the issues.

12-14 July:

Staff email and calendar services will be unavailable between 10.00 pm and midnight on Friday and 10.00 pm and midnight on Saturday, including email access from handheld devices such as smartphones and iPads. Outside of the above hours, all email services will be available, including Blackberry.

This transition activity has been completed successfully. The staff email and calendaring service (Exchange) is now operating from the new data centre.

25-26 July:

Between 9.00 pm Thursday 25 July and 2.00 am Friday 26 July, Lectures Online will be unavailable. This adjustment to the schedule has been made to ensure that this service is available during the 26-28 July weekend.

This transition activity has been completed successfully.
