Internet Explorer 8 Upgrade

Frequently Asked Questions - Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) Upgrade

Why are we upgrading?

The University has upgraded vUWS,(opens in a new window) our virtual learning environment, to use the new version of Learn 9. vUWS now provides additional functionality to enhance eLearning. Other corporate applications due to be upgraded in the coming year will also require IE8. However, many of these applications are not yet certified or tested on IE8, so this current upgrade is directed only at vUWS users.

Should I upgrade to IE8?

If you are a vUWS user and you do not currently use Alesco (as used in the Office of People and Culture, NOT Staff OnLine)  yes, you should upgrade to IE8. If you do not use vUWS, do not upgrade to IE8 until requested.

What if I have other applications that need IE7 rather than IE8?

You should only install IE8 if an application you use requires it, which will be communicated to you. If you currently use vUWS, you will receive an email on Monday 25 June advising you to install IE8.

As a general point, the only known clash is with Alesco, which is not yet certified for IE8. Alesco users should not upgrade to IE8 at this time. If you are unsure about other applications, please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.
