The Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (SIMS)

The secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) Cameca IMS 5FE7 determines the surface and near-surface composition in materials and detects elements ranging from hydrogen to uranium in parts per billion.

Potential SIMS applications include:

  • Depth profiling of semiconductor layers and interfaces
  • Segregation and diffusion studies in metals and ceramics 
  • Elemental mapping of materials surfacesIsotopic analysis of geological specimens 
  • Analysis of biological materials that can sustain ultra high vacuum

Industry Access

The UWS SIMS facility can provide an analysis of samples tailored to commercial client requirements. Pricing is determined by a number of factors including: 
  • Quantity of samples to be analysed
  • Analysis and report requirements
  • Expected frequency of analysis requirements
  • Time required to complete the analysis 
  • Publicly funded or commercial client

Research Access

AINSE Awards and Scholarships AINSE continues to support access to the SIMS at UWS. In addition to the on-line application form, there are links on the AINSE Research Awards page to other key documents which are vital to creating a valid application:
  • Guidelines for preparation of applications. Please read this document before starting an application. The Guidelines are intended to highlight the information you will be required to submit and are presented in the same sequence as the application form.
  • Users Guides contain information on the many facilities available to AINSE Research Award applicants. 
  • Conditions and Procedures 2010 contain administrative details of AINSE Research Awards.

Applications for access should be submitted to AINSE on the application form on the AINSE Website (opens in a new window).

Special applications will be considered for people with experiments that are ready to go; otherwise applications should be submitted in the next available round (Please see the AINSE website for more information).

Collaborative Research

Research in conjunction with external researchers is possible under a collaborative framework. Joint applications for ARC funding applications are encouraged. Please contact us for more information.
