Thesis Title
The Legal Framework for Representative Democracy and the Implications of Population Change for the Institutional Practices regarding Electoral Redistribution.
Thesis Overview
Australia has experienced long-term population changes that have had significant consequences for federal and state electoral systems. These changes include the movement of people from rural to urban areas, as well as the redistribution of population between States and Territories. This thesis will examine the law and legal institutions involved in redrawing electoral boundaries to take account of changes in the spatial distribution of Australia's population. The core of the thesis is concerned with the legal framework for representative democracy and the implications of population change for institutional practices regarding electoral redistribution.
