ALTC Grants Scheme

Research Status of Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Funded Projects

The Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) administers grants under the Grants Scheme, Fellowship Scheme and other initiatives. All programs are designed to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in higher education, facilitate innovation and collaboration, and disseminate best practice. The grants administered under ALTC programs are competitive, but they are not research grants and are not listed on the Australian Competitive Grants Register. This means that under present arrangements income from ALTC grants does not contribute to Category 1 income in determining an institution's Research Infrastructure Block Grant entitlement.

Nevertheless, ALTC funded projects, Fellowships and other initiatives may include a research component. ALTC guidelines and discussion with the UWS Office of Research Services (ORS) has been determined that it may be possible to declare research income derived from an ALTC funded project, Fellowship or other initiative in Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) under category 2 income- 'other public sector income' and so feed into the Institutional Grants Scheme (IGS), Research Training Scheme (RTS) and Research Performance Funding.

ALTC requires that each higher education institution determine what proportion, if any, of ALTC income from grants, Fellowships and other initiatives is considered eligible as Category 2 income.

Therefore, if an ALTC grant, fellowship or other initiative has a defined research component then UWS can declare that component and the funding of that component (generally as a percentage of the total funding received) as Category 2 income.

Application Process at UWS
Applications under the ALTC Grants Scheme will be considered by the UWS ALTC Liaison Group, which will provide feedback (if necessary) prior to submission to the ALTC.

Non-permanent, full-time UWS staff are eligible to apply for an ALTC Grant as long as a permanent UWS staff member co-leads the grant submission.

Competitive Grants Program
The Competitive Grants Program supports research and development focussing on issues of emerging and continuing importance; strategic approaches to learning and teaching that address the increasing diversity of the student body; development of robust methods of identifying and rewarding excellence in teaching (excluding awards schemes); and innovation in learning and teaching, including in relation to the role of new technologies.

Leadership for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Program
The Leadership for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Program supports systematic, structured and sustainable models of academic leadership in higher education.

Priority Projects Program
The Priority Projects Program addresses, in the first instance, priorities emanating from the Institute's designated responsibilities (including benchmarking, assessment, standards and related aspects of good practice in learning and teaching). Priority Projects may also focus on good practice in higher education in terms of creative and effective use of teaching and learning spaces, and collaborative, cross-institutional projects which examine the role of peer review in the enhancement of learning and teaching in higher education.

ALTC Fellowships Scheme

Application Process at UWS
Expressions of interest in the ALTC Fellowships Scheme are to be submitted to the Associate Dean Academic in the first instance. The Associate Dean Academic, in consultation with the Executive Dean will determine those staff who will be invited to submit a full proposal. Full proposals will be considered by the UWS ALTC Liaison Group, which will provide feedback (if necessary) prior to submission to the ALTC.

Aim of the Fellowships Scheme
The aim of the ALTC Fellowship Scheme is to advance learning and teaching in higher education by supporting leading educators to undertake strategic, high profile fellowship activities in areas that support the Mission of the Institute. Fellows are expected to develop a program that explores and addresses a significant educational issue; develop their personal skills and profile and to be ongoing advocates for excellence in learning and teaching. The fellowships will involve collaborative activities and the building of national and international partnerships. ALTC Fellows will become part of a national group of experts and leaders in learning and teaching in higher education. There are two programs in the ALTC Fellowship Scheme: National Teaching Fellowships and Teaching Fellowships.

ALTC Discipline Based Initiatives

The ALTC Discipline-Based Initiatives Scheme provides an important opportunity to encourage greater sharing of quality practice, initiatives and learning within and across discipline communities. This Scheme promotes the ALTC's objectives relating to the provision of discipline-specific development, dissemination and application of good practice. The Scheme funds initiatives undertaken by cross-sector affiliations of discipline-based leaders. The intention is that they will engage with their related professional, industry and community stakeholders in identifying contemporary and future-oriented challenges that have relevance to the preparation of graduates of the discipline. The results of the collaborations and investigations are to be translated into improved curricula that will ensure that graduates are being appropriately prepared for contemporary social and workforce contexts. Discipline-Based Initiatives are guided by a set of key principles which aim to encourage the articulation of a sector-wide, sustainable, future oriented, shared vision for each discipline.
