Special Requirements
Undertaking the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery and working as a doctor can be physically and emotionally demanding. Doctors are exposed to stress and disease. If you should have any concerns about this, or if you are aware of any reason, such as a chronic illness, a disability or a criminal conviction or have any impairment that might make it difficult to gain medical student registration with the Medical Board of Australia or to practice as a doctor after graduating from UWS, you are urged to speak about these important matters in confidence with one of our Head of Program. To arrange this, please call the Manager, Medical School Admissions on +61 2 4620 3630.
The School has a fundamental responsibility to ensure it complies with all legislative requirements, including legislation governing the Commission for Children and Young People. To that end and given the material covered from Year 1 of the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery, the exposure to real patients in NSW Health facilities from Year 1 of the course and issues of safety, it is not considered appropriate for students to commence the program before the age of 17.

Teaching Hospitals and Travel requirements:
The main hospitals located in the Sydney area for clinical teaching are Campbelltown, Blacktown and Mount Druitt, although students should expect they may attend clinical learning at other Sydney hospitals from Year 1 of the program. Whilst there is a shuttle bus running between Campbelltown Campus and Campbelltown hospitals, you will need to use either private motor vehicle, public transport or car pooling to access other locations.
The main hospitals outside of the Sydney Metropolitan Area are Lismore and Bathurst, although clinical training at other rural hospitals may be required. The School will consider special circumstances of students when allocating them to hospitals on rotation. However, we reserve the right to allocate students to hospitals that are not their first preference to ensure that students receive the highest possible quality of teaching. Applicants for entry into UWS Medicine must take this into consideration and be willing to undertake their training in a range of hospital and health care facilities.
