CAMERA: Culture And Medicine Education & Research Affiliation

The Culture and Medicine Education & Research Affiliation (CAMERA) group aims to provide a forum for the medical humanities in research and education, and pursues research and educational activities that facilitate a cross-disciplinary approach.

Medical humanities refers to the intersections of humanities and medicine and offers a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the education and practice of medicine in society. Medical humanities can include portrayals of illness and medicine in culture and the arts, historical and ethical issues relating to medicine and science, and the philosophy of medicine, as well as many other areas where medicine and humanities intersect.

The name of the group was chosen to reflect the diverse interests of the group members, and the acronym is intended to highlight the importance of looking at education and research from new perspectives and frames.

In keeping with this aim, CAMERA hosts regular medical humanities research seminars (see Seminars for details). The members also meet for a monthly reading group to discuss film, literature, history, art and research in the area. We encourage anyone interested in the medical humanities field to join us in our discussions at the CAMERA blog.

The CAMERA group looks forward to building its research activities and welcomes anyone interested to contact them for more information or about possible ideas for collaboration or joint initiatives in medical humanities.

CAMERA blog on medical humanities

We have opened up our medical humanities reading group discussions online at our CAMERA blog, and we invite anyone interested in reading or contributing to our discussions to join us there. We encourage you to share your thoughts on the topics we discuss, or suggest new ideas for topics. Our previous meetings have discussed themes such as:

  • controversies in race and health research in past and present times
  • disability and prenatal testing
  • complexities of doctor-patient communication in fiction and biography
  • medical television programs and paternalistic doctors
  • reflective practice
  • portrayals of informed consent and death in film
  • professionalism

We will be progressively updating our blog with these and other topics, and look forward to hearing from anyone interested in the medical humanities.
