Qualifications
BScMed, MBBS, MPH Syd, PhD UNSW, FRACP.Clinical Care
Professor de Souza has been involved in clinical work every year since his internship, including tenure at the University of Virginia, USA, where he was appointed to the Medical Faculty. Professor de Souza led the genitourinary oncology service, supervised Clinical Fellows, and ran his own laboratory research program. Since returning to Australia, he has continued to have a heavy clinical load seeing up to 100 patients a week, and currently sees approximately 50 patients per week. He has had medical oncology experience as a consultant medical oncologist in two continents and in five hospitals.Areas of Research Interest
Professor de Souza has a broad interest in cancer research in the fields of preclinical investigation of novel compounds, synergistic combinations of therapies, targeted therapies, signal transduction, cell biology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, clinical pharmacology, translational research and early Phase clinical trials. He also has research interests in genitourinary cancers (particularly prostate and renal cancers), as well as brain tumours.Professor de Souza's main areas of interest are:
- Translational drug development in cancer (preclinical to early Phase clinical trials of novel treatments)
- Urological cancer's, including renal, bladder and prostate cancer, signal transduction and mechanisms of drug resistance
- Neurological cancer, especially glioblastoma multiform
- Angiogenesis and biomarkers in cancer
- Quality of Life in cancer patient
