Wendy graduated with the University Medal in Medicine from the University of Sydney in 1986 and went on to train in General Practice with a special interest in child health. She has been associated with the Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW) since 1989, in clinical, research and administrative roles, and most recently as the Associate Director of Education at CHW. In this role she oversaw the strategic development of clinical and staff education, and operational management of the Education Centre and the first paediatric simulation centre in Australasia. Prior to this Wendy was Senior Lecturer in Medical Education at the University of Sydney medical school, working at Westmead Clinical School and the Office of Medical Education on building clinical teaching, core curriculum and the online curriculum map, Compass.
Wendy’s research experience includes commissioned evaluations of primary health care policy and clinical leadership programs, which followed her Masters of Health Administration (UNSW) in 2000. She completed her PhD (USyd), supported by an NHMRC Scholarship, in 2007, investigating clinician and consumer understandings of medical risk and uncertainty. This led to 10 peer reviewed papers and a book chapter in Australian and international publications.
Since starting at the School of Medicine in 2010, Wendy has been developing and implementing the General Practice and community based teaching and research components of the MBBS curriculum. She has initiated various interprofessional and cross-institutional research collaborations, primarily in health professional education (see below) and is supervising a new PhD candidate in the General Practice Unit. In 2011, Wendy was appointed Associate Head of School (Learning and Teaching), which has a School wide scope in the quality improvement of learning and teaching.
