Biography
Emeritus Professor Yeomans AM was the Foundation Dean of Medicine at UWS (2004-2009). He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in January 2013 for significant service to tertiary education, research and clinical practice in the field of medicine.
He was educated at Fish Creek State School, Foster High School, Scotch College Melbourne (Senior Scholarship), University of Melbourne (MBBS), Monash University (MD by thesis), University of Copenhagen (Research Fellow) and Harvard University (Research Fellow).
He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterological Association.
He has held hospital appointments at the following Melbourne hospitals: Royal Melbourne Hospital, Alfred Hospital, Austin Hospital and Western Hospital. His most recent academic appointments, before moving to set up the UWS School of Medicine, were as University of Melbourne's Foundation Professor of Medicine at Western Hospital, and Associate Dean (Academic Programs) in The University of Melbourne's Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
Areas of Research / Teaching Expertise
- Gastroenterology
- Peptic ulcer disease
- Gastrointestinal cell biology
- Experimental gastric pathology
Grants / Current Projects
- The PRECISION study: an international study centred at the Cleveland Clinic, to determine the balance of risks (gastrointestinal and cardiovascular) of COX-2 inhibitors and non-selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
- The ASTERIX study, which showed that gastric ulceration caused by low-dose aspirin ingestion can be prevented with a proton pump inhibitor drug.
- The JUPITER study, which documented the incidence and prevalance of ulcers in patients taking low-dose aspirin.
- Studies of factors affecting performance in aptitude tests and interviews for medical student selection.
- NH&MRC funded studies of mechanisms of adaptation by the gastric mucosa to repeated injury, and mechanisms in experimental gastric cancer.
- Predictors of myocardial (heart muscle) damage in patients with upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage.
