Professor Alison Jones

 

Biography

Professor Jones was Dean of the UWS School of Medicine from September 2009 until May 2011. She had previously been appointed to the University of Newcastle as Professor of Medicine and Clinical Toxicology, she spent eight years in several leadership positions, including Director of the National Poisons Information Service (London), and Head of Medicine at London’s Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital.

She was recently appointed as a director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), one of Australia’s premier research centres on strategic and defence policy issues.

2009 NHMRC Partnership Grant - Reducing impulsive behaviour in repeat violent offenders using a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (CIA - A/Prof Tony Butler - Curtin)

2009 NHMRC H1N1 Influenza 09 - Australian public’s H1N1 knowledge, risk perception, containment measure adoption and willingness to be vaccinated (CIA- Prof David Durrheim - Newcastle)

CRC-CARE grant working with Steven Wilkinson and Neil Rothnie, WA Chemistry Centre on iron and organic particulates inhalational toxicity (Cooperative Research Centre-Contaimination Assessment & Remeditation of the Environment funded)

CBRNE work around resilience and communication with Prof Beverley Raphael (University of Western Sydney Centre for Mental Health and Disasters) (National Security Science and Technology Branch - Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet funded)

GISETTO – assessing genetic susceptibility to serotonin toxicity after exposure to serotonergic drugs (NIH/ NIMH collaboration – funded – PhD student comes from School of Pharmacy, University of Newcastle)

World Health Organisation / International Programme work on antidotes (funded by WHO / IPCS)

Assessing neurocognitive dysfunction after sedative drug overdoses, PhD student supervised together with Prof Pat Michie, Psychology, University of Newcastle

Media Doctor project – work looking at health care reporting quality of journalists, with feedback interventions together with ICES Canada
