Professor Roger Bartrop

Biography

Roger Bartrop graduated in Medicine from the University of Sydney in 1963, and from the University of New South Wales with an MD in 1981.

His early post-graduate training was in paediatrics, pathology and adult medicine in Sydney teaching hospitals where he gained Membership in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He subsequently trained in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology at the Royal College of Surgeons, London and in psychiatry at St Bartholomew’s and Kings College Hospitals in London.

Professor Bartrop’s interest in the mind/body interface and psychophysiology was fostered in London. On his return to Sydney he was awarded an Institute of Psychiatry Research Fellowship for the period 1975-77 for him to study the influence of the stress of bereavement on immune and psychological outcome measures. Further studies in diverse psychophysiological areas have followed. Current research at the University of Sydney is exploring other cardiological and prothrombotic aspects of grief stress and, in a separate study, aspects of smoking cessation.

Roger continues his teaching and research commitments at the University of Sydney & in a part-time Chair in Mental Health at the University of Western Sydney, Blacktown Hospital campus.
