The School of Medicine officially opened by the Hon Julia Gillard

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, and Social Inclusion, Julia Gillard, officially unveiled the University of Western Sydney (UWS) $47.5m School of Medicine facility on the Campbelltown Campus, Monday 17 November 2008.

The state-of-the-art medical education and research facility at the UWS Campbelltown Campus is the home base for the University's current 200 medical students, as well as the School's 60 academics, researchers and support staff. The School of Medicine building is one of the most advanced medical training centres in Australia. The striking four-storey development provides students and researchers with specialist teaching and laboratory facilities, including simulated learning spaces for clinical skills learning, an anatomy laboratory, problem-based learning tutorial rooms and state-of-the-art research equipment.

'The School of Medicine facility not only represents the University's commitment to excellence in education and research, it also reflects its extraordinary journey and its future aspirations: a desire to push boundaries, meet real-world challenges, develop innovative solutions across the disciplines, and improve the lives of the people in its surrounding communities,' says Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid.

The UWS School of Medicine is helping solve Australia's critical medical workforce shortages and strengthening the State's health systems by training extra doctors to work across Greater Western Sydney's hospitals, health services and general practices, to keep pace with a rapidly growing population. The School of Medicine is making important contributions to Australian research in areas such as neuroscience, population health, molecular biology, pharmacology, genomics, and mental health.

Foundation Dean of the School of Medicine, Professor Neville Yeomans, says the twenty-first century design of the building is befitting a progressive medical school, which aims to produce highly-skilled and adaptable medical graduates who can deal with our nation's health problems head on. 'The School of Medicine education and research facility has been purpose built from the inside out, to best meet the needs of the School's innovative curriculum and modern teaching methods,' says Professor Yeomans.
