Professor Wendy Hu

Wendy joined UWS in 2010 and was appointed Professor of Medical Education in 2012. Prior to this, she was Associate Professor in General Practice and Associate Head of School (Learning & Teaching) at the School of Medicine. Wendy graduated from Sydney University with First Class Honours and the University Medal in Medicine and went on to specialise in General Practice with a special interest in child health. She worked for over 20 years at the Children's Hospital at Westmead in clinical, research and senior management roles. These included an NHMRC Scholarship PhD in clinician and consumer perspectives on medical risk and uncertainty and as the inaugural Director of Education, where she oversaw education and training services for all clinicians and staff. Wendy's professional and research interests include curriculum design, evaluation and quality improvement, judgement and decision making in clinical assessment, student research and learning experiences and staff development.

Dr Bronwen Dalziel

Dr Bronwen Dalziel works as a Senior Lecturer in the Medical Education Unit. She is the Year 2 Coordinator of the MBBS degree (as of 2011), and also coordinates the Scientific Streams for Years 3 to 5 (eLearning). Her current research focus is in Learning Design, particularly creating reusable templates for the development of content for online modules. Bronwen has a PhD (Science) from the University of Sydney, with research looking at genetic based differences in energy metabolism of obese people. Although Bronwen has moved out of a lab-based environment, she still has a firm interest in public education about obesity, childhood obesity and insulin resistance. Prior to starting at UWS, she worked for an eLearning company, LAMS International, developing online science lessons for K – 12 students in the UK, as well as running training courses on how to use the Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) software.
Dr Vicki Langendyk

Dr Vicki Langendyk has worked in medical education for over 10 years, having spent the first 15 years of her career in General Practice. The new School of Medicine at UWS is the third new medical programme Vicki has been involved in. She was a student in the early days of Newcastle Medical School, and went on to join a team of academics who oversaw the development and implementation of the new Graduate Medical Program at the University of Sydney in 1997.
Vicki teaches PBL, ethics and communication skills; and develops professionalism aspects of the curriculum. She completed a Masters in Education in 2005, and a Graduate Diploma in Philosophy in 2010. Vicki is now undertaking Honours in Philosophy at Macquarie University.
Dr Erin Mathieu

Dr Erin Mathieu is an Epidemiologist and works as the Lecturer in Community Research. She works closely with the Year 4 medical students on their Community Research rotation and provides advice regarding study design, data collection, data analysis and report writing to the students. Her research interests include research methodology, informed choice, adolescent health and physical activity. Erin has a Phd, MPH (Hons) and B.Ed, all from the University of Sydney.
Dr Iman Hegazi

Dr Iman Hegazi joined the Medical Education Unit in August 2009 as a PhD scholarship student. Iman was raised in Melbourne and completed her medical degree at the University of Alexandria, Egypt, where she also completed an MD in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology. Before coming to UWS, Iman had worked as a clinical toxicologist and an academic. She had also worked in medical education for almost 20 years. She currently teaches Problem Based Learning (PBL) and medical ethics tutorials. Iman is interested in the psychosocial and behavioural aspects/effects of the medical education process. Her doctoral research investigates the hidden curriculum in medical education.
Dr Laura Surmon

Dr Laura Surmon has been a member of the Medical Education Unit team as a PBL tutor since 2011. She has been working as part of Professor Annemarie Hennessy’s preeclampsia research group in the School of Medicine at UWS since 2010 but is now focusing on her new role as Lecturer in Foundations. Laura completed a Bachelor of Medical Science at UWS in 2003 and went on to specialise as a Scientist in Reproductive Technology, completing her PhD(Med) at the University of Sydney with a thesis entitled ‘The Role of Semen Cryopreservation in Sperm DNA Fragmentation’. Laura also completed the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching through Curtin University in 2012 to further develop her teaching skills and knowledge of curriculum design and evaluation. Laura is passionate about teaching and supporting her students. She also has an interest in medical education research including the effect of activity and sport participation on health, wellbeing and academic performance during medical studies.
Dr Tony Succar

Dr Tony Anthony Succar is an Associate Lecturer in the Medical Education Unit. He was recipient of The University of Sydney Postgraduate Scholarship in Vision and Eye Health Research, where he completed his PhD in medical education technology under the supervision of A/Prof John Grigg. His research involved the development and implementation of an innovative Virtual Ophthalmology Clinic on which medical students can sharpen their clinical reasoning skills by formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan on virtual patients with simulated conditions. Previously he completed a Master of Science in Medicine (Ophthalmic Science) in the development of a bionic eye for blind patients and holds a Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) from the University of Sydney. Tony is also a Clinical Associate Lecturer at the Discipline of Ophthalmology, University of Sydney where he is involved in teaching ophthalmic skills to medical students, postgraduates and has lectured to first and second year ophthalmology trainees (registrars). He is currently a reviewer of the Virtual Learning Environments module within the National Health Education and Training in Simulation (NHET-Sim) program for Health Workforce Australia.
Dr Shaun Wang

Dr Shaoyu (Shaun) Wang has associated with the Medical Education Unit since 2008, with focus on teaching in PBL and also on participation in curriculum development and research activities. He holds B.VetMed. M.Sci. and Ph.D. Since completion of his undergraduate training in veterinary medicine, he has lectured anatomy, histology and physiology, and also tutored several subjects in biomedical sciences. At UWS, he has lectured Biodiversity to year 1 students. Shaoyu has research interests and activities in medical education, development of anticancer drugs, neurobiology and systems biology, which have resulted in peer-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations nationally and internationally. He welcomes any collaboration on teaching and research.
Ms Lyndal McCulloch

Lyndal joined the School of Medicine as Manager of Medical Admissions in 2006. Since that time the School has recruited 6 cohorts of students into the MBBS, graduating it's commencing cohort at the end of 2011. Lyndal manages the application and admission process, supports students in their progress through the course and more recently, also manages the general administrative support to the medical education unit. Lyndal completed a Master of Technology Managment, with Distinction, at UWS in 2004.

Penny joined the School of Medicine in 2007. She assists with the coordination of the medical interviews, particularly looking after the many valuable interviewers who support the school with their time, expertise and exerpience during the interview process. Penny also provides general support for enrolled students to ensure they enjoy the best possible student experience.

Lorena joined the Medical Education Unit in 2007, just before the first student cohort arrived. She is the First Year School Contact Officer (FYSCO) for the School.

Melany Smith is the Assessment & Evaluation Officer, Medical Education Unit at UWS. Melany joined the MEU in 2007. She is responsible for the coordination and management of all assessment and evaluations processes undertaken for the MBBS course. Prior to joining the MEU, Melany was with the School of Economics & Finance in the roles of SAC and Offshore Programs Finance Officer. Melany came to UWS from Telstra in 2003 where she was a Project/Finance Officer for commercial design and construction projects onshore and offshore.

Debbie worked for the School of Medicine Deanery before moving to the Medical Education Unit in 2008. She is the administrative coordinator of second-year MBBS, which includes attendance, tutor coordination, and online distribution of course material to students. Debbie is also Secretary to the Year 1 and 2 Committees.

Julie Uljanic plays a duel role, mainly working as the assessments and progression officer but also supporting activities such as the interviews for applicants of the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery.

Mr Glenn Mason
Manager, e-learning & PhD Candidate
» Contact details
Glenn Mason is the manager of e-learning in the School of Medicine. He has a background in Philosophy, Cognitive Science and e-learning. Prior to his current role, Glenn worked for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Sydney University on medical education projects. He has extensive experience in commercial web development including working for media organisations such as Forbes and Choice as a web and database programmer. His interests include online education, informal learning, critical pedagogy, curriculum design and the medical humanities. His PhD research in the School of Medicine is concerned with the development of online learning designs for patients with type 2 diabetes.
Angela Hsiao
PhD Candidate
Angela Hsiao is an accredited dietitian and a credentialed diabetes educator with more than 15 years experience in clinical nutrition. Angela is in private practice in Campbelltown, Eastwood, Campsie and Kogarah and also sees patients at the Sydney South West Medicare Local. Her research interests include cross cultural aspects of diabetes care, in particular in patients of Chinese background. Angela's PhD will examine the values and beliefs of women with gestational diabetes from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, with a view to developing and evaluating an effective educational intervention.
