School Leavers
We asked some of our students the big question: Is Uni any different from High School? Their answers are below.
Differences between High School and Uni
|
High School |
University | |
| Enrolment | You enrol in Year 7 and may have the option in year 10/11/12 to select subjects. | You enrol each semester/session and select your subjects. |
| Personal Freedom/ Responsibilities | You do school work that is managed and prioritised by the teacher. | You are required to be more independent, to take responsibilities, make decisions and prioritise your study and life. |
| Classroom | Each subject takes place in a classroom with 25 students or less and they may be the same people in each class. | Class format may include lectures, tutorials, practicals, laboratory, field work or online work. Class size can range from small to very large. |
| Class Schedule | You have a set timetable of classes, usually between 8:30am to 3:00pm, Monday to Friday with recess and lunch in between. | You personalise your own timetable with choices of set times for each subject. Classes may run in the evening or on the weekend, depending on the timetabling of the subject. |
| Teacher | Teachers follow set text to help students learn. Often there is one teacher per subject and they will provide guidance and support in your study. | There are some similarities in this point. Teaching staff (lecturers, tutors) expand on and simplify set text with new information to help students learn. There are a number of academics per subject that expect students to be responsible for their work. Lecturers and tutors also provide guidance and support in your study. |
| Learning Style | You learn by absorbing and understanding the information provided, with majority of your study occurring inside the classroom | Students are required to think critically, generate new ideas and learn independently. A significant amount of study taking place outside of the classroom. |
