Send your stories of love to the My Human Family exhibition
Lily, who was rescued from her neglectful owners, is one of 40 dogs featured in the 'My Human Family' exhibition.
Western Sydney families who have adopted dogs from pounds and shelters are invited to share their stories and be part of the My Human Family – Rescue Dogs Find a Home community photographic exhibition.
Hearts will be warmed and tails will wag when the exhibition opens at the Margot Hardy Gallery (opens in a new window) at the University of Western Sydney’s Bankstown campus in April 2013.
Project Coordinator Nick Baldas says the community photographic project aims to raise awareness about the plight of abandoned, surrendered and neglected dogs.
“The exhibition/campaign is a national initiative to help create awareness for abandoned and neglected dogs. One of its main objectives is to show how unnecessary places like puppy farms are, when there are so many dogs in pounds and shelters that are deserving of a home,” says Mr Baldas.
“We are responsible for our four legged friends and the amount of cruelty that happens to our companion animals is wrong. But instead of focusing on the negative we want you to show us the love pound puppies give and receive in homes across Australia.”
The My Human Family exhibition was inspired by Pound Dog Billy who had been abandoned and nearly found a home. Due to an IT glitch, the pound staff didn’t receive an email from Billy’s adoptive family and he was euthanised the next morning.
The exhibition is comprised of 200 submissions from all over Australia. The photos and stories are of dogs that were rescued from pounds and were welcomed into loving human families. 40 of these stories will be shown within the Margot Hardy Gallery along with diaries from the Dog Diary fostering campaign.
Members of the community can join in with the project by submitting their own photos and stories here (opens in a new window).
Submitted photos and stories will feature in a pin-board gallery at the Margot Hardy Gallery exhibition and be entered into the Western Sydney Dog Diary – one of seven Dog Diaries travelling around Australia. Submissions will also go into the Queensland My Human Family exhibition being hosted by the Queensland Animal Welfare League in 2013.
Entries will close Thursday 28th February 2013.
