Professor Barney Glover announced as new UWS Vice-Chancellor

The University of Western Sydney’s Board of Trustees is delighted to announce Professor Barney Glover as the University’s new Vice-Chancellor and President.

Professor Glover, currently Vice-Chancellor of Charles Darwin University (CDU) in the Northern Territory, will formally commence at UWS on 1 January 2014 on the retirement of Professor Janice Reid. Professor Reid has been at the helm of one of Australia’s largest and fastest growing universities for almost sixteen years.

Professor Glover is an accomplished academic leader and experienced Vice-Chancellor, having spent the past four years in the role at Charles Darwin University(opens in a new window).

A graduate of the University of Melbourne with a Diploma of Education, a Master of Science and PhD in Mathematics, Professor Glover is a noted and internationally recognised mathematician with expertise in applied mathematics and mathematics education.

Building research infrastructure, partnerships and fostering a culture of research excellence are hallmarks of Professor Glover’s tenure in senior executive roles at CDU, the University of Newcastle and Curtin University of Technology. He has also demonstrated a deep commitment to widening participation and to exploring innovative approaches to access to higher education throughout his career.

UWS Chancellor, Professor Peter Shergold AC, says UWS should feel incredibly fortunate.

“UWS has for many years enjoyed the leadership of one of Australia’s great Vice-Chancellors, Janice Reid. Now Barney Glover, who shares our vision of UWS as a high quality but open institution, will oversight our continuing growth and development,” says Professor Shergold.

“I have no doubt that Barney’s experience, energy and enthusiasm will be directed towards continuing to develop further the excellence of our teaching, building our research capacity and performance and significantly enhancing the strength of our engagement with businesses and the communities of Greater Western Sydney. Professor Glover says he is honoured to be appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Sydney.

“I am looking forward to the challenges of leading a dynamic and impressive Australian university. Building on the extraordinary legacy of Professor Reid will be both daunting and exciting. The University is well placed to continue to extend its research profile, commitment to innovation and quality in teaching, and reaching out to the Western Sydney community,” says Professor Glover.

Retiring Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid AM warmly welcomed the appointment of Professor Glover.

“It has been a great privilege and a joy to lead UWS during a time of such dynamic transformation and growth. The University will be in very good hands with Barney. He is an accomplished leader who exemplifies the values that are at the heart of this fine University and has the knowledge and experience to lead UWS in the next phase of its development, ” says Professor Reid.

Professor Glover’s significant business leadership credentials are demonstrated through his membership of the boards of a range of corporate organisations and several state and national centres, covering areas such as health and medical research, energy, mineral exploration and processing, and telecommunications. He also has a very strong track record in the establishment and ongoing strategic development of relationships and joint ventures between higher education institutions, industry and the community.

Professor Glover is a leader in the development of flexible, technology-based learning and in furthering Indigenous knowledge and education. He also demonstrates considerable experience in forging strong and mutually beneficial relationships with the vocational education sector.

UWS Chancellor Professor Peter Shergold and Vice-Chancellor Professor Janice Reid will work cooperatively with Professor Glover to ensure the smoothest of transitions as the University community welcomes its new Vice-Chancellor.
