UWS pays its respects to former Premier Wran
The University of Western Sydney notes with much sadness the passing of former NSW Premier, the Hon Neville Wran AC, on Sunday, 20 April.
Mr Wran has rightly been acknowledged a progressive reformer, delivering important social and economic outcomes for NSW during a period of considerable challenges and rapid structural and political modernisation.
Perhaps less known, is the former Premier's particular dedication to education. During his ten years in office (1976-1986), Mr Wran's administration established '47 secondary schools and 82 primary schools', many of them within western Sydney.
On the urging of a range of diverse supporters, including former federal member for Chifley, Roger Price and others, the former Premier was a key figure in enabling conditions for the eventual creation of the University of Western Sydney in 1989.
As the member for the former seat of Bass Hill (now taking in the electorates of Bankstown and Fairfield), from 1973 to 1986, Mr Wran was also a strident advocate for this rapidly growing area of western Sydney.
The University pays the highest respects to former Premier, the Hon Neville Wran AC, and his family.
