Dr Sharon Hillege

Biography

Dr Sharon Hillege, RN, RM, BHS, P.Grad Cert TESOL, PhD, has been an academic for 23 years at three universities, the University of Sydney, Australian Catholic University and now the University of Western Sydney. She has a keen interest in student literacy for both local and international students. She has gained qualifications in TESOL, and has worked in a number of teaching areas to improve English literacy in students.

Sharon also has a very keen interest in clinical nursing and in particular the effects of simulation on student learning. Other research interests are in the area of adolescents and young adults in particular Type 1 diabetes, eating disorders in collaboration with researchers at the University of Australian Catholic Sydney, prevention motivation theory in nursing students as it relates to skin cancer prevention (in collaboration with researchers at Avondale College) and the role of nurse practitioners with researchers at Australian Catholic University.

Research projects have included exploration of postnatal depression in Arabic women, exploration of the impact that Type 1 diabetes has on the self of adolescents and adults with diabetes (PhD.) the impact of an eating disorder has on parents and students perceptions of skin cancer. She is one of the authors of Fundamentals of Nursing & Midwifery: Australia & New Zealand which has a person-centred focus on the individualistic, interactive and wholistic nature of nursing and midwifery care published in May 2009.

Her publications and conference presentations reflect these research interests, as well as this she has an ongoing interest in qualitative research methods.
