Walter & Eliza Hall Trust

Since its establishment by Eliza Hall in 1912 with a donation of £1,000,000, the Walter & Eliza Hall Trust has been helping Australians in need. During that time many tens of thousands of Australians and their families suffering the effects of poverty have been assisted in surviving a crisis. Many others have been helped to reach their full potential.

In response to the growing demand for assistance from families and individuals, the Trustees set up The Walter & Eliza Hall Supplementary Trust in 1986 in order to be able to receive tax deductible donations. Since then this supplementary trust has been, and continues to be, supported regularly by some generous benefactors, including

The Walter & Eliza Hall Trust Opportunity Scholarships at UWS are funded through a generous bequest from the late Judy Lennox. She herself had a severe physical disability but her parents were determined to ensure she had access to education, the opportunity to travel and was able to obtain her driver’s license to allow her to live as independently as possible. While she was well provided for, Judy understood that this was often not the case for people with a disability. She left her entire estate to the Trust to ensure that for students with a physical disability the absence of money does not stand in the way of allowing them to achieve their maximum potential.

Applications and Selection Process

Applicants must provide a statement in support of their application indicating how they believe the receipt of the scholarship will assist them with their studies and in their future career. This statement should give a sufficient explanation of the applicant’s background and current circumstances to enable the University to judge their eligibility, need and merit.

Successful applicants will be selected based on their written application, academic potential, their ability to meet the criteria and, where appropriate, performance in an interview before a selection panel.
