Nursing and Midwifery Orientation Programs
The UWS Orientation program will help you in your transition to university and to a new chapter of your life. Each session has a different focus and therefore it is important that you attend both.
Orientation is the official start of the Autumn session and specifically designed to introduce you to the University and key staff members.
It’s also the time to ask all your questions and...
- check with appropriate staff if you have problems with your enrolment or tutorial registration
- obtain important information about settling in at UWS and life in Sydney
- meet other new students
- get prepared for your classes
- have fun and get ready for the UWS experience!
Orientation Sessions
At your Orientation session you will find out more information about your course, have the opportunity to meet academic staff, get to know other students from your course, ensure that you are prepared to start classes and tour the library and the campus.

What are My Course Planning (MCP) sessions?
My Course Planning sessions are held before the start of the teaching session before Orientation. They are compulsory and provide important information about your course and check with appropriate staff if you have problems with your enrolment or tutorial registration.
You may be able to apply for Advanced Standing for previous study at your My Course Planning session.

Course Decision Day, Thursday 3 January 2013

At the UWS Course Decision Day, you will have the opportunity to talk one on one with UWS staff and current students about courses, pathway options and student life.
If you are undecided about your study path, UWS Course Decision Day will give you all the information you need to help you make your decisions. Academics from all areas of study will give presentations on courses and you can speak one on one to an academic in the Course Advising Rooms. There is also information available on admissions, career opportunities, scholarships and student services.

Course Decision Day 2013 will be held at Parramatta Campus, Corner of James Ruse Drive and Victoria Road, Rydalmere
- Free parking is available at Rosehill Racecourse. Free shuttle buses will run between Rosehill Racecourse and Parramatta campus from 3.30 pm till 8.30 pm.
- Free shuttle buses will also run between Parramatta station (departing from Darcy Street) and Parramatta Campus from 3.30 pm till 8.30 pm.

Maternity, Mothers and Mental Health 2012 Mothering Conference

This conference aims to:
- Examine current Australian and international evidence on risk and protective factors influencing women's and men's mental health in the perinatal period
- Discuss the social and emotional support needs of women and families in the perinatal period including the needs of migrant and refugee women
- Provide health professional with culturally appropriate strategies and techniques to incorporate into the care they provide form women and their families
Dr Cindy-Lee Dennis is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto and holds a Canada Research Chair in Perinatal Community Health and the Shirley Brown Chair in Women's Mental Health Research, at Women's College Research Institute, Toronto. She is currently the principal investigator on two multi-site RCTs related to the prevention and treatment of postnatal depression (Canadian Institute of Health Research) and a co-investigator on 12 other relevant projects. She has over 70 peer-reviewed publications concerning the care of women during their pregnancy and the postnatal period. She developed the international adopted Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Theory and Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale.

The Graduate Diploma in Midwifery is for registered nurses (authorized to practice in Australia) wishing to pursue a career in midwifery - the art and science of providing holistic care to the woman and family throughout the childbearing process. This course enables you to gain a recognized tertiary qualification and registration to practice midwifery. The course is presented in conjunction with public hospitals in Sydney and is approved and recognized by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Place of Birth and Models of Care Conference
With a premiere screening of the highly anticipated Film "The Face of Birth"
"A documentary that examines contemporary birthing practices through the personal stories and journeys of women who choose to have their babies at home."

- Explore current research into outcomes for women and babies in different places of birth and models of care
- Explore current controvesies and beliefs around place of birth and models of care
- Provide health providers with knowledge and tools to support the goals of Toward Normal birth

Mental Health and Wellbeing month
October is national Mental Health month. To mark this event, UWS is hosting Mental Health and Wellbeing month from 4 - 24 October 2011.
This year's theme is 'Wellbeing: invest in your life'. Wellbeing is about happiness, satisfaction, how well we handle life and the quality of our relationships with others. We all have our own list of the things that are important to our wellbeing - what's on your list?
Come along to your campus to join in the activities, learn about wellbeing and take stock of your life.
Activities happening across all campuses include Pool competitions, Bingo and Jenga games, performances and airbrush tattoos. There'll also be free food, freebies and a host of prizes.

MHFA teaches participants how to assist someone who is developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crises. It also teaches how to recognise the early stages of a mental illness.
