Gillian Hendry Student Profile

Student Profile
Name: Gillian HendryCourse: Bachelor of Nursing
I completed my HSC in 2007 and went straight from school to full time studies with the School of Nursing UWS. At present I am working part time for a nursing agency which allows me to study full time. My studies have really helped me with dealing with the agency's clients and the experience I have gained has assisted with my nursing education.
Why did you decide to undertake the Bachelor of Nursing course?
I have always been interested in science and the medical field, so it was a natural progression to apply for the nursing course. I also have family members that have been nurses or midwives so I have been surrounded by people in the profession. This career has many options and is limited to only what you want to do with it. It is because of these 'options' that I was attracted to the course, I can do so much with this degree.
Why did you choose to study at UWS?
Before applying to UWS I had heard about the School of Nursing from other students who were already studying there and they mentioned that the facilities and tutors were excellent. I also spoke to my brother who is a current student of UWS and he also gave the university accolades. It was important to me to go somewhere with a good reputation.
What is it like to be a student at UWS enrolled in this course?
My first year was daunting as I was freshly out of school and having to fend for myself with no teachers chasing me for assignments and attendance. I also had to make new friends, understand the workings of what was expected, and I had to get to know my tutors. I won't pretend it was easy, there was a lot to take in. Once 'the dust settled', I found the facilities to be excellent. All the tutors were very approachable and I have made some great friends that will definitely be there after I have finished this course.
What are you hoping to gain by completing this degree?
Completing this degree in itself will be an achievement for me. I hope to gain employment in one of the large hospitals in Sydney and expand on my knowledge and experience. This degree has also given me something that I will use in my everyday life. I will take away a network of great friends and eventually I would like to be able to travel overseas and get work nursing in another country.
What are your professional goals after completing your degree?
I am quite young so gaining experience is upper most in my mind. I would like to travel with this degree and then eventually continue with further studies in this profession. Now that I know what is possible and available, I feel I can do so much more.
