Karen Watson Student Profile

Name: Karen Watson
Course: Bachelor of Nursing (Honours)
 Karen Watson
I am a mature aged student and mother of two, I returned to study nursing through the graduate entry program as I had previously completed a Bachelor of Health Science Naturopathy with UWS. A local in the Macarthur area I am the first person in my family to hold a degree.  I am completing my honours year in a part-time capacity; this allows me time to balance research and professional commitments. My work at the Children’s Hospital Westmead and with Carrington Centennial Care informs my research and experiences in the nursing field gives substance to my writing.

Why did you decide to undertake the Honours program?
To be offered the honours program was a privilege and recognition of my academic accomplishment. Once accepted I found many interesting areas of nursing which warranted investigation. Honours allows me to utilise the knowledge gained from my previous degree and combine this with nursing literature to make a difference in peoples lives.

What is your research topic?
My interest is in the literature surrounding the ageing population and how best to meet their needs. Investigated is the efficacy of complimentary therapies as a treatment for agitation in older people living in residential aged facilities (RACFs). Music therapy, massage, aromatherapy, exercise and therapeutic touch have minimal side effects and promote quality of life to older people.

What is it like to be an Honours student at UWS?
Being an honours student allows me to research a subject I am passionate about within a supportive environment. My supervisors support my research in a collegial environment guiding my research needs. The library staff have proved excellent allies in collating and locating information.  Limited face to face teaching allows time to establish a professional career whilst furthering education.

What has been the highlight of your Honours program?

Attending the 2009 International Dementia Conference as the UWS Aged Care and Palliation Teams honours student was a highlight and a privilege. Researching a topic of my choice ensures I remain focused and committed to my objectives. The esteem from many of my professional colleagues who respect continuing education is rewarding.

What are your professional goals after the completing your Honours program?
I would like to continue my studies into a PhD level. Eventually working within both academia and the private sector to provide informed evidence based protocols for residential aged care facilities. To continue through evidence based practice and reflection to achieve the best possible outcomes for the clients and families I come into contact with.
