Rakime Elmir Student Profile

Student Profile

Name: Rakime Elmir
Course: PhD

Melanie JacksonWhy did you decide to undertake a research program?
To further my research career and identify gaps in the literature where future research can be directed.

What’s your current role in the health system?
I work part-time as a registered midwife in the delivery suite.

What is your research topic?
The primary focus of my doctoral research is on women’s experiences of enduring a hysterectomy following a severe postpartum haemorrhage (large amount of bleeding following childbirth). To date, there are no studies conducted on women who face this life changing phenomenon, it is imperative to direct research into this area.

Why did you choose to study at UWS?
I have studied at UWS for 7 years and have also studied at other universities. UWS is unlike other universities; it embraces students’ learning, provides equal opportunity to students from diverse cultural and linguistically backgrounds, and facilitates learning in a supportive environment, academic staff are the first line of support to students as they engage with students in a positive and constructive way.

What is it like to be a PhD student at UWS?
Being a PhD student at UWS is like studying at home. As mentioned previously, the amount of support you receive is incredible. My supervisors in particular are my backbone, I feel confident in knowing that at any point I am able to contact them, whether it be through email, phone or personal conversation, despite their tight schedules as Professors.

What are you hoping to gain from doing this degree?
I perceive my PhD as a journey and a transitional process from novice researcher and writer to a more experienced and independent researcher. I hope to gain skills and expertise in writing for publication, peer review and gain confidence in presenting at conferences.

What are your professional goals for the future?
I envisage growing professionally through post doctoral research and academia.
