Why did you decide to undertake a research program?
My journey to a PhD started with my Bachelor of Nursing. Having left school at 15 many years ago I was surprised to discover that I was good at studying. I accepted an offer to do Honours and found I loved the autonomy of research and contributing to my professions body of knowledge. I got a first class pass for my Honours degree, and so a PhD has been a natural progression.

What’s your current role in the health system?
I also work part time at Nepean hospital in the Intensive Care Unit as a registered nurse.

What is your research topic?
Using a storytelling approach my PhD study will explore Australian women’s experiences when their ability to mother their children is disrupted by life circumstances.

Why did you choose to study at UWS?
I have never considered any university but UWS. It was my local university and has an international reputation for nursing research.

What is it like to be a PhD student at UWS?
There is a very supportive and collegial atmosphere at UWS. Things like the writers retreats run by FaCH, and belonging to the Student Research Club contribute enormously to your professional development and portfolio. Many of the higher degree research students correspond regularly online and meet for lunch. This has not only created strong friendships but also provides a sounding board and yardstick for your own progress.

What are you hoping to gain from doing this degree?
I hope to develop strong research skills during the three years which will enable me to to conduct research and strive for excellence in women and children’s health. Doing a PhD has also provided me the opportunity to meet other local, national and international midwives and nurses who are conducting research in similar areas. This network of key people will be invaluable in the development of future research collaborations.

What are your professional goals for the future?
My ultimate goal of course is to have a satisfying and enjoyable career, but for the moment I will concentrate on completing my PhD.
