Balancing act
If you’re finding it hard to balance work with study, you’re not alone. Around two-thirds of UWS’s student population juggle study and work commitments. Third-year Bachelor of Business and Commerce in Human Resources and Industrial Relations students Laiken McCabe and Brodie McCauley found a solution by joining the Jobs on Campus program.
The Jobs on Campus program is a service that provides UWS students with the opportunity to apply for paid, professional experience right here on UWS campuses – whether you’re seeking some extra income or in need of valuable work experience.
Working at UWS has given Brodie confidence and reinforced that Human Resources is the career path she wants to pursue, with the bonus of being convenient. “Working with the Careers and Cooperative Education Unit has allowed me to gain paid, degree-relevant professional experience,” says Brodie. “The program is extremely flexible and understands that students are being recruited with commitments to the University, too. There are jobs within all of the campuses, so you can work closer to home or where you study, depending on the position.”
As part of her role as Recruitment Assistant at UWS, Brodie shortlists job applications, schedules interviews, advises students of the outcome of their application, prepares reports, takes minutes, answers queries and more.
“Working at UWS has been a major stepping-stone in my life and a huge learning experience that I will take with me,” says Brodie.
Laiken is also employed as a Recruitment Assistant. “My enthusiasm for working in this field has increased,” she says. “The job has helped me confirm that I have chosen the right degree to study as well as the right industry to work in.”
Laiken recommends the Jobs on Campus program to all students. “The positions can often be degree-relevant – and the best part is that you get paid by the University! It’s also very convenient to work on campus because when you finish work you can relax in one of the nearby cafes or make a quick trip to the library to finish off an assignment.”
If you’re looking for work closer to home or where you study, or perhaps you want some experience in your chosen career field, head to the Jobs on Campus webpage (opens in a new window) for more information about the program.
