Scoring a scholarship

What would a scholarship mean to you? Not having to spend as much time working to earn money to pay your way through university? Spending more on study or activities that interest you? When working and studying at the same time, you may find you have little spare time for socialising or gaining invaluable work experience.
Such was the case for Candice Skelton, a Bachelor of Natural Science (Animal Science) student who received the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation Scholarship in 2012. “Because I’ve always strived hard to get the highest marks I can in all my subjects, finding time to work a paid job and be involved in activities of interest to me has always been hard,” explains Candice. “Receiving a scholarship has alleviated the pressure to find a paid job to support rental payments and other living expenses.”
Because Candice has more time to spare, she is volunteering at an animal shelter and has established a club at UWS called Animal ARC (Association for the Rights and Conservation of Animals) – both of which are in line with her aspirations to become an animal conservationist once she has completed her studies. “Without a scholarship I would have to find a paid job and would struggle to find time to organise fundraisers, manage the Animal ARC group or visit the animal shelter,” she says. “In this way, a scholarship has socially and mentally enriched my university experience.”
