Winning work: preview the 2013 student diary design

There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing a vision and product of your hard work come to life – which is just what has happened for Bachelor of Design student Lea Broadbent who has won the 2013 Student Diary Cover Competition.
This year’s theme was ‘Balance’, which encompasses health, wellbeing, sustainability and vitality – some of the key areas of focus for UWS during 2012 and 2013.
“I chose to focus on a universal symbol, the yin yang, accompanied by a peaceful Zen background,” says Lea of her winning design. “I felt using typography to create the yin yang symbol helped to formulate a comprehensive design for a broad theme.”
When designing the cover, Lea says she took into consideration both the values of the University as well as a reflection of the attitudes of the students, which is why she opted for the typography approach to the design.
Lea says she’s very interested in custom typography and branding and wants to find work in a creative studio or branding house when she finishes her studies. “Illustration is also a very big passion of mine and will be included almost always in my creative process,” says Lea. “I’m very pleased to add the diary design to my portfolio and feel proud to represent UWS, especially in my field of study.”
