Students relish internship experiences
|
If you want to reaffirm that you’re studying the right course or would like to know more about the different roles in the industry, an internship can be a great way to find out. Of course, internships are also a great way to boost your professional knowledge and practical experience, and to network in your field.
Here, three students share their internship experiences.
Soobhana Biswas, a combined Business/Law student, travelled to India to work at IDP Education, which was arranged by the Careers & Cooperative Education Unit. “Employers are looking for well-rounded individuals, so doing an internship overseas shows that you can take on new opportunities,” she says.
Overseas internships aren’t all about work. “I made so many new friends,” says Soobhana. “One day, four UWS interns and I toured the Golden Triangle in India. It was amazing! Seeing the Taj Mahal early in the morning was a very tranquil experience.”
Richard Pourau, a third-year Arts and Law student, completed two internships through the Aurora Project – one with Community Legal Centres NSW and the other with the Australian Human Rights Commission. “While I applied for my internships with the expectation that they would prove both personally satisfying and professionally productive, I could not have imagined how fortunate I would be in experiencing so much in such a short period of time,” says Richard. Jessica Elakis is also currently in the midst of a law degree and completed an internship last summer at the Australian Human Rights Commission. “I was able to utilise the skills and knowledge I had attained from the past years of study in my law degree,” says Jessica. “This allowed me to see the practicality of all those late nights of study.” Read Jessica’s article about her internship experience in her article (opens in a new window).
