Never quite got around to starting or completing your Duke of Edinburgh Award? If you’re still under the age of 25, it’s not too late.
UWS is one of the first Australian universities to become a registered Duke of Edinburgh provider and in 2012, will offer students the opportunity to undertake this internationally recognised award.
“Students get involved in a great range of activities to develop their skills, knowledge and fitness,” says Diana Whitton, who coordinates the program at UWS.
Areas of focus include physical recreation, skill development, volunteering and an adventure journey. The activities are undertaken at your own pace with mentoring and guidance from UWS staff.
You can choose to start the program at any level – bronze, silver or gold.
“The program is so rewarding and allows you to better different aspects of yourself – be it through a skill, a physical activity or volunteer work,” says student Charlotte Raad who received her silver Duke of Edinburgh Award in 2009. Charlotte is currently undertaking the gold level, which involves a residential project.
“I can wholeheartedly say the program shaped me as an individual and made me aware of my local and international community. I recommend Duke Of Ed to everyone and anyone!”
First established in the UK in 1956, the Duke of Edinburgh Award program is now undertaken by young people in more than 120 countries worldwide.
