Our medical students have access to some of the best training facilities in the nation – a fact which is not lost on fourth year Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery students Alan Trieu and Adrian Jeyendra.
Both students are on full time clinical placements at the new UWS Blacktown/Mt Druitt Clinical School, officially opened by Prime Minister Julia Gillard in October.
“Having the $20.6 million facility at our disposal is a privilege,” according to Alan, one of the many medical students who use the clinical school to hone his clinical and diagnostic skills.
The three storey facility is equipped with lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, a medical library, study areas, conference rooms, and even overnight accommodation for students who are on-call.
“The tutorial rooms allows for small clinical teaching sessions conducted by a variety of staff specialists to complement bedside learning on the wards,” Alan says.
Given the intensity of medical training, it is perhaps not surprising that two of the most popular areas are the common rooms and outdoor hub.
“The student common room provides a spacious and relaxing environment to enjoy lunch and meet our fellow colleagues,” says Adrian Jeyendra.
For Adrian, the benefit of the new clinical school extends beyond the facilities to the opportunities to learn from other health professionals.
“I think we are very privileged to be mentored by individuals who have volunteered their own time to make sure that we become the best doctors we can be.”
The new clinic is revolutionising healthcare training, allowing UWS medical, nursing and allied health students to train together, in preparation for their future careers working together.
The first cohort of medical students from the UWS School of Medicine will graduate in December this year.
