Associate Professor Steven Freeland: Climate Change - What is a Nation to do?

Associate Professor Freeland says without a legally binding agreement at Copenhagen it will be very hard to coerce countries to reduce carbon emissions. He says pledges made in public forums are easily broken, whereas a country that breaches legally binding arrangements can be subject to a lot more pressure, such as sanctions.

He says there is also political danger for Australia as it tries to position itself at the forefront of a new international agreement. He says as the world’s largest polluter per capita, Australia’s credibility as a substantial middle power may take a hit if there’s no concrete action to reduce emissions at home.
