Dealing with Books and Book Publishers

Intended for This workshop will be useful for staff at different stages of their academic career: those considering writing at book length, and those actively preparing a book for publication, as well as scholars who have already published books but are addressing changes in the publishing environment.
Description
Most academics are involved in book publishing at some stage of their careers: as an author, or editor, or contributor to a scholarly or specialist professional book, a textbook or a presentation for a broader audience. In some disciplines the book is the expected norm, in others a less regular form of publication. What is changing in book publishing, and what is not? What strategies assist a successful outcome for publishing plans: in writing, in finding and approaching a suitable publisher, securing a contract and beyond?
Format: A presentation by Dr Robin Derricourt, together with some written worksheets, and exchanges of perceptions and experiences between participants.
Topics in the workshop will include:
- Setting personal and professional goals
- Setting and using a personal timetable for publication
- Inputs: research and more
- Defining audiences
- Media forms: the many meanings of 'publish'
- The how, what and when of getting published, including:
- Journals: electronic and print
- Conference papers
- Books and monographs
- Magazines: print and online
- Newsgroups and other online publishing
- Multimedia and new media
- Issues and questions in a changing environment
About the Presenter
Dr Robin Derricourt has over 30 years’ experience in senior editorial and management roles for Australian and international publishers; he was a publishing director for Cambridge University Press in England and Australia, a senior publisher for Pearson (Longman Group), group director of Fine Arts Press and G&B Science, and until 2010 was the chief executive of the University of New South Wales Press.
His own background includes a PhD from Cambridge and he has taught at universities in Australia, the United Kingdom, South Africa and the USA. He currently holds a visiting appointment as an associate professor in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at UNSW. His own published writing includes six books and over fifty articles and chapters, including a guidebook to scholarly and non-fiction publishing.
