Business and Report Writing

Intended for all staff that are required to write documents as part of their role.

Description

This one-day workshop focuses on styles of business and report writing frequently used at the University. Participants will gain skills and useful information for writing and producing documents that are well structured, clearly written and consistent across UWS, and gain an understanding for the way accountability drives the need for thoroughness and accuracy in all writing tasks.

Key topics covered are:

  • common writing problems
  • writing plain English
  • writing readable reports
  • writing letters that work
  • writing E-mails that work
  • tips on grammar and punctuation.

Learning Objectives

This course will enable participants to:

  • write a document to get the job done
  • clarify the concept of, and practice writing plain English
  • build confidence in writing different kinds of documents
  • decrease the number of times work is returned for correction
  • develop strategies to inform the appropriate level of detail required in a document
  • structure a document appropriately.

There is a cost of $250 per person.

About the Facilitator
Dennise Harris B. English, M. Modern English Language, M. Adult Ed.
Dennise has lectured in English and Linguistics at Macquarie University and tutored in the Masters of Education Program at the University of New England. Dennise has many years administrative experience in the NSW public sector and extensive writing experience for local, state and federal governments, university administration and the private sector. Dennise has also been a Professional Assistant to Director-Generals in State Government Departments.
