Supporting Students with Mental Health Issues

Intended for new (and existing) UWS staff who have direct contact with students and whom students are likely to approach to discuss difficulties.

Description

This workshop provides practical strategies and useful information in dealing with students who are facing mental health difficulties. A mental illness can have a significant impact upon the thinking processes, emotions, perceptions, motivation and confidence, resulting in difficulties in learning, problem-solving and achieving academic and vocational goals.

This program will assist participants to recognise, communicate with and manage students who are experiencing mental health problems.

Learning Objectives

This workshop will enable participants to:

  • develop skills in listening and responding to students experiencing mental health difficulties
  • identify situations where it may be appropriate to refer on for more specialist support and consider the referral process
  • explore issues about rights and responsibilities such as confidentiality and appropriate role boundaries
  • increase their knowledge of mental health illnesses and how these impact on students and their studies
  • gain knowledge about the resources available to support students on and off campus .
