Preventing Things Going Pear Shaped - Tips for Effective Early Staff Interventions

Facilitators/Trainers Linda Watson - Manager, Complaints Resolution and Ken Hodson - Associate Director, Workplace Relations and Organisational Design
Intended for managers and supervisors

Description

From time to time, supervisors may become aware of an issue or situation involving their staff that needs to be dealt with both quickly and appropriately. These situations can be stressful. Overlooking or not following the correct procedures or policies can later cause more problems. This workshop is designed to provide supervisors with helpful information on the importance of following processes, who to contact for advice, and pitfalls to avoid when 'things go pear shaped'.

Learning Objectives

This workshop will enable participants to:

  • describe the supervisor's responsibilities and parameters of authority in decision making
  • discuss the benefits of taking early and appropriate action
  • apply skills for having difficult conversations with staff with constructive outcomes
  • identify situations that can cause a breach of fairness and/or process
  • document discussions and decisions, even when we're using informal processes
  • understand the supervisor's responsibilities for performance related matters as outlined in the relevant UWS Enterprise Agreements

This course is part of the Leadership and Management Development Program.
