Leadership and Management Development

Blending “the inner work of intense personal development and the outer work of leadership in action” (Brown 2001)
The University recognises the talents of its people and is committed to developing the capabilities and skills of its managers and leaders.
Managers and Leaders at UWS are expected to act as role models for the kinds of values and behaviours expected of all staff at UWS. These values include:
- having high ethical and professional standards
- being transparent, accountable and responsible for our actions
- committed to the mission and values of UWS
- engaging with our people and the community
- engendering a culture of service and dedicated to meeting the needs of our students, clients and stakeholders.
The following programs provide for the enhancement of management and leadership capabilities. Further information is available at the Managers Guide to UWS site, designed to assist you in your leadership and management role at UWS.

The iManager Series
The iManager Series is for supervisors and managers at UWS. This new and enhanced management development program replaces the Management Essentials Program and adopts a blended learning approach to enable completion of training at your desk. The iManager Series recognises that UWS managers and supervisors have a key leadership role and a responsibility for ensuring they and their staff understand and apply the relevant legislation, University policies and procedures and Staff Agreements; that their work is aligned to the University’s strategic goals, values, and Code of Conduct; and that they participate in the University’s performance planning and development processes.
The iManager Series comprises both face to face workshops and online modules. Each of the three iManager Series is mandatory for all managers and supervisors. Extension workshops and online modules are also available that complement further learning within the iManager Series.
As a guide, all Managers and Supervisors should complete the iManager Series mandatory workshops and online modules over three to six months. For new Managers and Supervisors the iManager Series must be completed during their probationary period. It is recommended that Managers and Supervisors complete the iManager Series every three years to stay up-to-date with changes to policies and legislation.
If you completed the Management Essentials Program during 2012 contact us at od@uws.edu.au to check whether your training is current.
