FAQs

Why have these changes been made?

By encouraging more staff and students to make use of public transport and by offering yellow parking only on the north site, the University aims to reduce the overall demand for parking. For those whom are unable to use public transport, the purchase of a blue permit for parking on the main campus will make it easier and quicker to find a space than in recent years.

In line with the NSW State Government’s Metropolitan Transport Plan, the University’s long-term goal is to increase the use of public transport by staff and students. The University will continue to work with NSW Transport and Infrastructure to enhance and promote public transport for UWS campuses.

Do these changes apply to staff as well as students?

Yes, the changes to parking at Parramatta apply to both staff and students.

Will I definitely be able to get a car park if I buy a blue permit?

Only the purchase of a red permit guarantees you a parking space. In 2011, a red permit will be $654 – which equates to $12.58 per week.

How do UWS parking fees compare with other universities?

The cost of a blue permit in 2011 is $253; equating to $4.87 per week for the calendar year to park on the main campus. A yellow permit for parking on the north site equates to $1.52 for students and $3.25 for staff per week. The price of a yellow permit is still the lowest of any University parking in Sydney, and the blue permit is lower than the vast majority.

Why can’t a multi-storey carpark be built at Parramatta?

Whilst this has been explored, the cost of building the structure and the impact this would have on the price of permits would be too restrictive.

What about safety issues associated with parking on the north campus?

CCTV cameras and safety/emergency alert points will also be installed on both sites providing further safety. These works will commence in the first half of 2011.

Will there be a ‘grace’ period?

Campus Safety and Security recognises that staff and students will require some time to purchase permits in the early parts of 2011. This has been taken into account in planning for 2011.
