Group Therapy/Counselling

How to work with groups of clients.

Cognitive-behavioural group therapy has been used very successfully for a number of specific populations, for example: anxiety, depression, eating disorders and older adults. The interlacing of CBT, relationship building, and meaning making is particularly suited to a group setting.

The aim of this workshop is to introduce practitioners to the advantages of therapeutic group work.
There is increasing evidence that, for some psychological conditions, group therapy adds value to individual work.

Learning Objectives

  • Group skills to manage group processes
  • Client selection criteria
  • Tailoring cognitive-behavioural  methods for a specific population
  • Evaluating outcomes
  • Using the group to maximise learning.

Proposed Activites

  • Setting the scene (physical, emotional, intellectual)
  • Setting the culture of the group (protocols, expectations, feedback, learning)
  • Interlacing the cognitive-behavioural with the deep and meaningful
  • Evaluating effectiveness (group and individual)
  • Experiencing group processes.

Presenter

David Russell is a lecturer at the University of Western Sydney. David’s PhD (U. Syd.) was a comparative study of varying aspects of CBT for socially anxious participants. His group work began at the Langton Clinic (drug & alcohol) where he ran a weekly therapy session for ex-clients and their partners.

David has been a participant over a period of 20 years in a range of group therapy programs (Adlerian, Jungian, psychodrama, Gestalt, dreams, family systems). As an educator, he has always used group learning as his preferred mode of engagement.
