About Us

The aim of Gender, Culture and Health Research: PsyHealth is to understand and improve health related experience and behaviour within a socio-cultural and gendered context, through a program of research in collaboration with regional, national and international stakeholders.

The group adopts a multidisciplinary approach to research and theory, drawing on psychology, psycho-analysis, theology, cultural studies, sociology, public health, and women's studies. This has resulted in a diverse range of methods and epistemological perspectives being adopted within the group, including critical realist, phenomenological, feminist and constructivist qualitative research, systemic, and psychoanalytic research, as well as quasi-experimental and experimental methodologies.

Women's Reproductive Health (including premenstrual experiences and menopause)
Sexuality (including cancer and sexuality, vulvodynia)
Gender and Health

Culture and Community Wellbeing

Community Mental Health
Psychological Medicine (including cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and self-harm)
Culture and Environment

Spirituality and Health

Spirituality and psychological health
Construction and wellbeing of spiritual leaders

Members of PsyHealth have achieved over $2,500,000 (AUS) in funding over the last 3 years, with success in ARC Discovery and Linkage applications, as well as research contracts from the Migrant Resources Centre, Penrith Panthers, Nepean Division of General Practitioners and NSW Health. Our partners include: Cancer Council NSW, National Breast Cancer Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation, Family Planning NSW and Relationships Australia.
