Energy and Climate
Transitioning to a Low Carbon Economy
We all use energy at home and at work, most of which is generated by burning coal. Coal is a non-renewable resource, expected to run out in the near future, which produces large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions that are released into the atmosphere.
Our RCE partners are all trying to make a tangible difference in their workplaces. To find out more on what we are doing please see Greening our Operations.
Love Food Hate Waste
The Love Food Hate Waste program aims to help households become more sustainable and to also address impacts of climate change. We tend not to think of food waste as having an adverse impact on the environment because it is biodegradable. However, most food waste ends up in landfill where it creates methane, a greenhouse gas, which is 25 times worse then carbon dioxide for climate change. Find out more about the Love Food Hate Waste program.
Making a Difference in Climate Change
Parramatta Climate Action Network (opens in a new window) takes action and provides information to create opportunities to achie
ve sustainability. The group is pushing for a drastic increase of renewable energy sources used in Australia, with a particular focus for solar energy.
National Climate Action Summit
Australia’s Climate Action Summit is an annual conference held at a different location each year, we bring together people from around the country for a weekend of workshops, panels, discussions and skill shares relating to climate change.
A non-partisan summit, we involve participants from all political persuasions to engage in the process of stopping human induced climate change. To find out more or to register to attend please visit the Climate Summit (opens in a new window) website.
The Earth Relay
The Earth Relay coordinated by Nature Conservation Council of NSW came to Old Parliament House at Parramatta Park and coincided with our John Seeds “Despair and Empowerment Workshop” at Parramatta Lake.
Community, environment and sustainability groups and their supporters celebrated the progress on laws that will put a price on carbon pollution and create billions of dollars of investment in renewable energy by coming together for a group photo with a giant earth globe in front of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Please see the NSW Earth Relay 2011 video on YouTube (opens in a new window).
350 Australia
It is estimated that we can emit 565 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide and stay below 2°C of warming (predicted temperature rise). Anything more than that presents risks for life on earth. The problem is burning the fossil fuel that corporations now have in their reserves would result in emitting 2,795 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide – five times the safe amount. Find out more by visiting 350 Australia (opens in a new window).
