Dr Steven Drakeley
Biography
Born in Birmingham England, I emigrated to Australia as a child in 1966. I was educated at Liverpool Boys High School and the University of Sydney. Travel adventures to Southeast Asia during my late teens sparked a life-long interest in the region, particularly in Indonesia.

Research and Engagement Interests
Learning and Teaching Interests
I teach subjects on Indonesian history and politics, Islam, Southeast Asian international politics and Asia in general.
Research Interests
My primary research focus is on the role of social and political forces based on Islam in the political history of Indonesia since independence, with particular emphasis on the 1950s-1970s. Other general research interests include Islam in Southeast Asia, Indonesian history and historiography, and Malaysian history.
Engagement Interests
I am a member of the organising committee of the Sydney Indonesia Study Circle (SISC) and of the UWS Muslim Harmony Reference Group.
