Dr Hao Zhang, Senior Lecturer, School of Civil Engineering - Structural Reliability, University of Sydney.

This presentation considers two representative mid-rise steel moment frames subjected to combined gravity and wind loads. The frames are designed using second order inelastic analysis with a set of postulated system resistance factors. The probabilities of strength and serviceability limit states are evaluated. The effects on these limit state probabilities of system resistance factor and wind-to-gravity load ratio are examined.

Biography: Dr Hao Zhang is a senior Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney. He obtained his BE and ME degrees in 1998 and 2001, respectively, from Tsinghua University. At Georgia Institute of Technology, he completed his PhD degree in Civil Engineering in 2005. He joined the University of Sydney in 2008. His primary research interests lie in structural reliability theory, uncertainty modelling in structural engineering with both probabilistic and non-probabilistic approaches, risk-informed hazard mitigation, and advanced analysis and design of steel structures.

His research has been strongly supported by external research funding from Australian Research Council Discovery Projects and Linkage Projects. His most recent research projects include 1) system reliability-based steel structure design, 2) reliability-based design of temporary supporting structures at the stage of construction, 3) probabilistic study of the behaviour of steel racks under accidental forklift truck impact, and 4) reliability analysis based on limited data.
