Future Research Students

Information for future postgraduate research students:A happy male and female university student

The University of Western Sydney fosters excellence in the development of future research leaders in cutting edge technologies and methods. In joining UWS as a graduate researcher you will be part of a vibrant and dynamic research culture with world class research undertaken across a diverse range of areas.

The University of Western Sydney nurtures a distinctive, high-impact research culture, committed to enhancing the cultural, economic, environmental and educational development of our region and beyond.

Research degrees

All research degrees must be at least two thirds independent research and most UWS degrees are 100% independent research. Some programs may incorporate taught subjects and some candidatures may be tailored to the individual’s requirements by including taught subjects for that candidature.

Support for your research

UWS supports all research candidates with both financial and intellectual resources. There are scholarships, research seminars and workshops. Workshop topics include presentation skills, interpretative and quantitative methodologies, architecture of the thesis, project management, argumentation and final stages of thesis preparation.

The Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) has awarded the University the maximum 5 stars for its resources policy supporting higher degree research students.

Candidates participate and contribute to conferences and other research events in the school or institute.

All research candidates have at least two supervisors. This is to ensure a range of skills available to the candidate and continuity of supervision during periods of absence of a supervisor. The high quality of research supervision is supported through requirements for supervisor registration and via a dynamic research education development program for supervisors.

Finding a supervisor

Applicants must discuss their application with an academic advisor. It is recommended that in the first instance you contact a School or Research Institute HDR Director (or equivalent) in the relevant area.
