DEST removed this category from the 2003 Collection (of 2002 Publications). The UWS Research Committee resolved to continue capturing data relating to this research output in order to supplement the DEST audited data used for internal reporting purposes.

Eligibility

• must meet the definitions of research (see section 1.2, Definitions of Research) as elaborated in the key characteristics of research (see section 4.1, Key Characteristics) as per DEST specifications
• must have clear evidence indicating UWS affiliation
• the concept of commercial distribution or recognised independent gallery/museum will be used as a surrogate quality test in place of a formal peer review requirement
• be released, performed, exhibited etc for the first time in the collection year (even if the majority of the exhibition occurs in the following year)
• can be in any media such as CD, video, electronic, web etc, but must be commercially distributed by an entity whose core business is producing creative recordings and distributing them for sale
• can be a foreign language work, provided verification evidence is translated to English (i.e. not necessary to translate the entire work, but relevant sections to demonstrate it meets criteria)
  

For exhibitions:

• be curated and accompanied by a published catalogue identifying the individual works
• be advertised external to UWS (i.e. in industry press, professional journals, or state/national newspapers)
• group exhibitions will be eligible, however will be weighted per the ratio of works included to the overall exhibition number.  This will allow significant recognition to an individual artist/designer represented with a substantial number of works.
  

For written or recorded creative works:

• be of at least 20 minutes' duration if a film, play or musical score
• be recorded or bound/packaged for sale and commercial distribution, under the imprint of a recognised commercial press or publisher (as per existing DEST specifications)
• provide evidence of the role(s) of the participant (e.g. writer, illustrator, producer, director, etc). Registrable activity must be within the creation rather than performance of the work.
  

Validation Requirements

For all:

• affiliation evidence
• bibliographic information, i.e. publisher, all dates relating to copyright, publication, printing, distribution, exhibition
  

For exhibitions:

• copy of catalogue contents, preface, introduction, ISBB (if applicable), name of exhibitor and curator, date and location of exhibition, total number of works in exhibition and total number of works by claiming artist
• copy of advertising, which should include name of publication and date advertised
• evidence that the gallery/museum is an independent public or commercial organisation (e.g. evidence of a governing board, is a financial concern, annual report extract, employs staff, is autonomous (i.e. independent of the university)
  

For written or recorded creative works:

• evidence to support commercial distribution (e.g. cover/notes)
• evidence of running time
• evidence of the role(s) of the claimant (e.g. writer, illustrator, producer, director, performer etc).
  

Genre Examples

The types of creative works that meet the criteria include:

• novels
• books of poetry
• published play or film scripts
• published scores of musical works
• recordings of live music, theatre or dance performances
• films, multimedia productions or sound production.

Exclusions

The types of creative works that are unlikely to meet the criteria include:

• reviews of exhibitions, concerts, theatre productions etc.
• live music, theatre or dance performances
• uncurated exhibitions
• performance component of a scripted work (e.g. acting, performing, unless improvised work).
