DEST removed this category from the 2003 Collection (of 2002 Publications). The UWS Research Committee resolved to continue capturing data relating to this research output in order to supplement the DEST audited data used for internal reporting purposes.
This category refers to full patents (or equivalent) on specific products or processes granted for the first time, either in Australia or in an overseas country.
To articulate with other categories, the criteria for Patents are set to the previous DEST specifications.

Patent equivalents that meet the criteria include plant breeder rights.
Proof of full patent being granted; acceptable evidence would be in the form of a patent certificate or other documentation showing patent number, title of patent, country in which the product or process is patented, name of person or body to which the patent is granted, and date the patent is granted; and either
proof that the patent is owned by the university, a commercial subsidiary, controlled entity or other affiliated institution
or
a statement from the patent owner attesting that the research leading to the patent was undertaken at the claiming university.
