Partnerships Program

Applications Called: August 2008
Closing Date: 10 October (Round 2)
Results Announced: November 2008

This flexible scheme is designed to assist researchers develop research projects jointly with external partners, broadly described as those from industry, commerce and the public and community sectors; and to assist researchers to gain greater understanding of industry research needs through collaborative research and development projects.

A high level of collaboration between the University researchers and eligible partners must be demonstrated to develop new links or significantly enhance existing links. Innovation will be a central feature of successful applications.

The Partnerships Program is designed to encourage partners to explore and promote their research to a point where support from the ARC Linkage - Projects or other major external funding programs can be realistically sought.

There will be two calls for applications each year, one in March and another in August, though in exceptional circumstances applications may be made out of phase with the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research).

International Research Initiatives Scheme (IRIS)

Applications Called: August 2008
Closing Date: 19 September (Round 2)
Results Announced: November 2008

The International Research Initiatives Scheme is designed to support research at UWS through specific initiatives that lead to a strengthening of the research competitiveness and international profile of UWS. Activities proposed for support should lead to the generation of international linkages and collaborations with the prospect of international and other external research funding, and publication outputs that fall into the major DEST categories.

Both teams and individual researchers may submit a proposal for funding.

The major focus of the scheme is the development and support of international linkages. A core objective within the UWS Research Plan 2004-2008 is the strengthening of our international research presence.

There will be two rounds each year.

Research Infrastructure Fund

Applications Called: June 2008
Closing Date: 1 August 2008
Results Announced: September 2008

The Research Infrastructure Fund (RIF) is designed to provide major infrastructure (minimum award $100 000, maximum award $500 000) to areas of demonstrable research strength at UWS founded on a core group of research active staff with shared research interests and complementary expertise.

The scheme is designed to allow such areas of strength to remain competitive in the national and international research arena and to increase their capacity to compete for major external research funding and undertake high quality research training.

The UWS Research Plan 2004-2008 has set the University the objective of 'enhancing research infrastructure by supporting research centres and University-wide research programs'.

The expectation is that RIF support will lead to an increase in major external funding and higher quality research training.

This scheme is not designed to substitute for UWS Systems Bid funding or Capital Works funding. Separate funding is available to support ARC Linkage, Equipment and Facilities grants.

Eminent Research Visitor Scheme

Applications Called: June 2008
Closing Date: 1 August 2008
Results Announced: September 2008

The Eminent Research Visitors Scheme seeks to intensify the research capacity, international links and collaborative research activity of nationally competitive research groupings at UWS. The scheme covers support for visits by eminent researchers from overseas for at least eight weeks a year across a designated triennium (2007-2009).

The focus of the scheme is on supporting research groupings with demonstrable national research competitiveness. The expectation is that support under the Eminent Research Visitors Scheme will lead to the submission of major funding applications, particularly linkage with international funding opportunities.

The Eminent Research Visitor is expected to be able to share their expertise and fundamentally contribute to the research grouping’s development during their periodic stays at UWS. The Eminent Research Visitor must be able to help form new intellectual bridges, promote scholarly exchange of research expertise, and enable UWS researchers to discuss topics and action research at the forefront of knowledge in the relevant fields. Scholars must have high-level international reputations as researchers and must clearly advance the acquisition of leading edge knowledge in the fields in which UWS is seeking to maintain research excellence.

Seed Grants for Early Career Researchers

Applications Called: June 2008
Closing Date: 1 August 2008
Results Announced: September 2008

The Research Seed Grants Scheme offers initial funding for the establishment of projects conducted by new investigators, supporting both individual investigators as well as small research teams.

The primary objective of the scheme is the support, on a competitive basis, of quality research projects of modest financial cost (up to $7500) to be carried out by new investigators showing clear evidence of high research capacity.

Research Seed Grants allow an investigator the opportunity to discover with reasonable speed and cost whether a large-scale research project is feasible. Proposals of a speculative or novel kind are particularly welcome but should be accompanied by a research plan that can demonstrate theoretical or practical potential.

Generally, funds will not be made available for projects viewed as a normal part of course/curriculum development. Grants will not be awarded to holders of grants from other granting bodies for essentially the same project.

Duration of grants is for 12 months. A final report must be provided to the Office of Research Services no later than one month after funding ceases.

Research Grant Scheme

Applications Called: September 2008
Closing Date: 24 October 2008
Results Announced: December 2008

The Research Grants Scheme is designed to offer funding to individual researchers or research groups who have successfully undertaken the first stages of a research project with the use of seed funding from UWS or other sources, and have a twelve to eighteen month program in mind. The scheme aims to promote the project to the point where support from the ARC program or other major external funding scheme can be realistically sought.

The primary objective of the scheme is the support (up to $25 000), on a competitive basis, of quality research projects to be carried out by investigators showing clear evidence of high research capacity.

Generally, funds will not be made available for projects viewed as a normal part of course/curriculum development. Grants will not be awarded to holders of grants from other granting bodies for essentially the same project.

Duration of grants is normally to a maximum of 12 months. A final report must be provided to the Office of Research Services no later than six months after funding ceases.
