It is UWS policy that all principal academic supervisors of research candidates are registered on the Graduate Supervisors Register. This requires attendance at a Research Supervisors Forum once every three years. Renewal dates can be found on the Graduate Supervisors Register.
The following forums are available for booking now via Staff Online. In addition, there will be at least two larger forums with invited guests, to be held mid year.
Venue: Ward Library Seminar Room, Building BA, Werrington South
Time: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
This forum is designed for new to UWS staff and will introduce UWS policies and practices.
We
will discuss the HDR context at UWS, and the relationship to both
national and international contexts. The session will explain relevant
governance structures, key responsibilities and important contacts. The
session will particularly outline the milestones for the first year of
candidature and the reporting processes.
There will be a focus on the UWS context to explain how to get things done to help you to perform in your role and get the best for your students. You will find out who to contact and when, what policies apply, responsibilities of academic governors and how to solve problems that may arise. The group will benefit from the shared experiences of participants.
Venue: Ward Library Seminar Room, Building BA, Werrington South
Time: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
Doctoral candidates mostly learn about research and writing though feedback on their own writing. Good feedback can impact significantly on a candidate’s learning, their self-esteem and timely completion. This practical workshop offers opportunities for supervisors to discuss and explore different ways of giving feedback on the writing of HDR students.
Participants are asked to bring along a one or two page (de-identified) example of feedback they have given on candidate’s writing. We will work with a selection of these texts during the workshop.
Workshop Presenter
Dr Claire Aitchison
has worked with HDR candidates for the Student Learning Unit, the
Office of Research Services and for individual Schools and Research
Centres at UWS for many years. Claire has written about and presented
at numerous conferences on writing groups and research writing. In 2007
she delivered seminars on ‘the Role of Feedback on Writing for HDR
students’ at UWA, Murdoch University and the University of Newcastle.
Venue: Ward Library Seminar Room, Building BA, Werrington South
Time: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
This forum is designed for academic staff who are relatively new to supervising higher degree candidates.
It will
focus on establishing the candidature, creating a quality experience
for students, responsibilities of supervisors, managing supervisory
panels and look at problem solving in candidatures. There will be
information about revised policies and we will have an opportunity
to ask questions and clarify procedures.
