Research Supervision Development

Reforms to the management of research by the federal government have resulted in changes to the way research supervision is managed within universities. There are now clear expectations for universities to provide a comprehensive development program for research supervisors and to report to DIISR annually on this provision.

At UWS, responsibility for the design and provision of a staff development program for research supervision is shared across the University. The Teaching Development Unit (TDU) works closely with both the Office of Research Services and the Colleges to provide a range of resources and programs to support research supervisors.

Research Supervisor Forums
Research supervisors are required to participate in at least one research supervision development forum every three years, although they are encouraged to participate more regularly. These forums are conducted periodically throughout the year and at all campuses.

Web-based resources for research supervisors
Web-based resources, listed below, provide easy access to information and guides on aspects of research supervision. These resources include a set of basic guidelines for the different stages of supervision, ideas on building a research culture within academic groups, and on evaluating the quality and effectiveness of supervision, as well as useful links to other sites.

College-based research training activities
EDC works closely with staff in the Colleges responsible for Research Training to provide discipline-focused workshops, resources or consultancy with individuals and groups.
